This empire built on genocide, both literally and figuratively was intentional. Wall Street was once residential where families and merchants owned and sold slaves. There was a slave market right in the Financial District at Wall and Pearl Streets. The streets were lined with businesses, offices and mansions owned by moguls and political figures, many of whom became the country’s ‘Founding Fathers’.

Wall Street and much of the city’s financial district was built on top of the burial ground of African slaves. New York’s success is a direct result of profiting from the enslavement of Africans.
