He paid a $100,000 bond (10%) to a bail bonding agency, which in turn puts up the million which they’ll get back if he appears in court as required. It’s the same basic principle as insurance, but for people awaiting trial: everyone pools their money so they pay a little bit, the person managing the pool uses it to guarantee the rest.

Since he’d previously paid $15,000 bond on a $150,000 bail, he actually only had to pay $85,000. But his lawyer is using the spectre of the million dollar bail to convince “like-minded citizens” who “would have done the same thing” to donate their money to his legal defense fund.

Which is just about depleted, what with all the credit card debt and home repairs he paid for out of previous donations.
